Parent Community

The families who choose GEMS for their child come from all walks of life and all corners of the globe. Many of our families are recent transplants to Chicago from countries thousands of miles away, and just as many have had their roots firmly planted in Chicago for generations. We’re proud of our reputation of being one the most diverse preschool–8 independent schools in Chicago. The diversity of our community is not only a key benefit to our students, who enjoy richness of discussion and the sharing of unique perspectives in class, but also to their parents and family, whose social and sometimes professional circles widen by being part of our community. Our diverse parent community is united by their passion for the International Baccalaureate program and their belief that a GEMS education is the best possible preparation for their children.

Parental Involvement

At GEMS World Academy Chicago, family plays a vital role in student success, whether through support at home or active involvement in the school community. We offer many opportunities for parents to become involved at GEMS:

  • A dedicated online portal that allows GEMS World Academy Chicago parents to receive information about their children’s progress and interact with teachers.
  • Opportunities for parents to share their experiences and expertise with students and to volunteer in the classroom and the school community at large.
  • The chance to accompany classrooms on Field Studies and deep exploration of Chicago, giving parents a chance to learn new things about a city they’ve lived in for a lifetime or to which they have recently relocated.
  • A Parent Ambassador Program that allows parents to introduce GEMS to interested families and offers those that are new to the school community a friendly face as they get to know everyone.

The GEMS Parent Teacher Organization

A key avenue for parent involvement is the GEMS World Academy Chicago Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), the school’s parent-run volunteer group. PTO members volunteer their time and actively participate in the GWA community through activities such as planning special community events, fundraising and engaging with non-profits, and coordinating new school-wide initiatives with teachers and administrators. Contact PTO here.

The PTO focuses its efforts via a series of standing committees:

The Social Events Committee brings the student body and the parent community together by organizing and planning social exciting events throughout the year.

The Cultural Engagement Committee takes advantage of the international approach of GEMS World Academy Chicago by helping to arrange events that explore and celebrate the social and cultural diversity of the school community.

The After-School Program and Club Committee works with faculty, administrators, and students to develop a strong collection of clubs and activities that students can enjoy through the extended- learning program. The After-School Program and Club Committee works with faculty, administrators, and students to develop a strong collection of clubs and activities that students can enjoy through the extended learning program.
