5 Minutes (or less) with Mr. Bean

Well, we all know Spring Break isn't exactly the same this year, but we thought we'd take a few minutes to check in with our teachers & staff to see how they're spending their time.

What were your initial plans for break?

I was going to visit friends in New York and have Passover with my parents, sister, brother-in-law, & niece in Providence.

What are your plans now?

Writing, reading, cooking, exercise videos.

What positives are you taking away from this experience?

"Then the land shall enjoy its sabbaths as long as it lies desolate. As long as it lieth desolate it shall rest; because it did not rest in your sabbaths, when ye dwelt upon it" (Leviticus, 26:34-35, KJV)

Is there a project that you've now found time to tackle that you had been putting off for years?

Remote teaching takes more time than in-person teaching, so i have not had a lot left for personal projects-- but my wife & I have started baking bread, which has been fun. We made a ciabatta a few nights ago that came out quite well.

What is the first thing you will do when the isolation is lifted?

Basketball; dinners with friends.

What book are you reading right now?

The Life of Benvenuto Cellini, written by himself, (translated by Anne Macdonell)

Thinking back on the first few weeks of remote learning, what has surprised you about your students in this environment?

A lot of students are really taking advantage of this flexible, remote learning environment by getting in touch with me outside of class hours to ask about course content, discuss their writing assignments, ask for book recommendations, etc. I've been really impressed with the initiative these students are taking.
